2006 JAWS results

Two of our juniors entered the GNAS JAWS competition last year along with 260 other juniors of all ages nationally. Archers submit a record of what they have done during the year and are awarded points for entering tournaments, winning them, gaining awards etc. etc. Henry Scott came 32nd with a score of 1153 and Bethany Roberts was 109th with 528. Not bad for 10-year-olds!

More Field Records for Naomi

Leamington's GB international recurve archer, Naomi Folkard, took a break from target archery last weekend (23/24 June), to attend the East Midlands and Northern Counties Field Archery Championships, held at West Wood, near Souldrop in Bedfordshire. Shooting the double 24 Target FITA Mixed Round, she had a very successful weekend breaking the national records for both the single and double rounds.

The tricky course through thick woodland was made difficult on Saturday by heavy rain, and although on Sunday it was dry and at times sunny, it was very slippery underfoot. Each day archers shot 12 targets at unmarked distances and 12 at marked. On Saturday, Naomi was pleased to shoot 337, beating the long standing national record of 319 set by Pauline Edwards in 1995. On Sunday she added a few more points and gained a remarkable total of 341. Naomi's two day total of 678 put an amazing 46 points on to the existing national record of 632, again set by Pauline Edwards, and puts the ladies' recurve record one point higher than the men's.

Naomi, who now holds, or has outstanding claims, for all of the national records (ladies' recurve) in FITA field rounds, will unfortunately be unable to take part in this summers' European Field Championships, because of international commitments in target archery.

Leamington Archers Top University Champs

Leamington club members, Colin Geenes and Tom Kemp finished first and second respectively in the British Universities Sports Association Archery Championships at the Lilleshall National Sports Centre last weekend (16/17 June).

In the men's recurve competition Genes, shooting for Coventry University, was the run-away winner with an excellent score of 1243 for the men's FITA round (3 dozen arrows at each of 90, 70, 50 and 30 metres), so adding individual gold to the silver medals for recurve and compound, which he won earlier in the year at the BUSA Indoor Champs. Tom Kemp (Warwick University) won the silver medal with an excellent score of 1199.

Naomi is Sports Personality of the Year

Naomi recieving awardNaomi Folkard was named Sports Personality of the Year at the inaugural Warwick District Sports Awards. The Olympic archer received her award in a ceremony at Leamington Town Hall, where a crop of the area's top sporting talent gathered last Friday to celebrate a year of outstanding success.

Naomi, who competed for Great Britain at the 2002 Sydney games, is in full-time training for Beijing next year and is also targeting London 2012. She has the number one GB lady archer for six years.

Leamington junior Bethany Roberts was also among the nominations for Junior Female Player of the Year.

156th Leamington & Midland Counties Archery Meeting

The 156th Leamington & Midland Counties Archery Meeting was held in Leamington last weekend. The 2 day event, first held in Leamington in 1851, is the second oldest fixture in the archery calendar, and today, on the second day, incorporates the County of Warwick Junior & Open Championships and a county match between Warwickshire and Leicestershire.

Each day archers shot traditional English rounds: for the men the York round of 12 dozen arrows (6 dozen at 100yds, 4 dozen at 80 yds, and 2 dozen at 60 yds): and for the ladies the Hereford round (distances 80 yds, 60 yds and 50 yds), There was a full range of Bristol rounds, involving shorter distances, for juniors. The event had national record and rose status. The excellent weather, with only a light breeze, encouraged good scores, and there were a large number of rose claims.

Most of the Leamington club members were involved in running the shoot, but those who could be spared to shoot did extremely well, as did members of other local clubs. Many of the splendid trophies originating in the 19th century went to local archers.

The Fisher Cup for the highest Double York was won by Brian Tustin (2019) followed by Tom Kemp (2009). Bethany Roberts won the medal for the highest Double Bristol 4 for under-13 girls (2306), followed by Caitlin McCarthy (1898) and they also took the same placings in the County Junior competition on the Sunday (scoring 1134 and 1002 respectively). Henry Scott won the County under-12 Bristol 4 competition with 1126.

In the county match Warwickshire seniors had a resounding victory. Among the team were Leamington recurves Brian Tustin (1040), Tom Kemp (1010) and James Folkard (998); and compound Dawn Leide (1116). Also shooting during the weekend were Pete Hunnisett, Tony Wager, Phil King and Max Sowerby.

Full results are on the Midland Counties page.

World Cup Points for Naomi

Leamington's top archer was in action last week in the third leg of the FITA Archery World Cup event in Antalya, Turkey. Recurve archer Naomi Folkard put in an excellent performance to finish in the top ten and gain valuable points in the World Cup.

The competition took the form of a FITA round of 12 dozen arrows, 3 dozen at each of 90, 70, 50 and 30 metres for men, and 70, 60, 50 and 30 metres for the ladies, followed by head-to-head knock-out matches of 12 arrows. The weather was good with only moderate winds, which encouraged high scores. The entry was high with 51 countries represented.

In the ladies' recurve section the competition, particularly from Korea and China, was formidable. In the qualifying round Korea took 4 of the first five places, with Choi (Korea) scoring an amazing 1374 and team mate Park, the Olympic gold medallist 1368. Naomi scored 1311 in the qualifying round to finish 21st out of the 105 recurve ladies. Team mate Alison Williamson, the Olympic bronze medallist, with one point more, qualified 19th.

In her first match Folkard beat Diasamidze (Georgia) 109 to 106. This brought her up against Malaysian Abu Samah, against whom she had convincing victory, 106 to 90. Next came a hard fought match against Korean TY Lee, but Folkard came out on top, 108 to 106 to reach the quarter finals. Here she met another Korean, SJ Lee, but despite putting up a strong fight in which the lead was changing hands throughout, she lost by just 1 point, 108 to 109. Folkard finished in 7th place to gain a further 11 points in the World Cup, in which she now lies in 12th place. Williamson finished 10th and gaining her first World Cup points is now standing in 26th place.

This event has improved Folkard's World Ranking, bringing her up from 26th to 22nd. She is expected to take part in the UK Masters at Lilleshall National Sports Centre, next weekend.

Dawn wins County Championship Award

Three Leamington archers took part in the 2007 Warwickshire County Championship shoot held on 28th May at Meriden in conjunction with the Stephanie Hall Memorial FITA Star Open Shoot. The bank holiday weather kept scores low, being mostly wet with blustery winds. Archers shot the FITA round consisting of 3 dozen arrows at each of 90, 70, 50 and 30 metres (70, 60, 50 and 30 for ladies).

Dawn Leide won the gold medal for Ladies Compound, narrowly beating Janette Ross (Meriden) for the County Award.

Taking part in the County Gents Recurve competition were Brian Tustin, who took the bronze medal, and Pete Hunnisett.

Leamington win BA Leagues again

The results of last winter season's 'British Archer' postal leagues were announced this week. Once again RLSAS archers topped the tables and Naomi Folkard won individual awards.

We again entered 4 teams in the indoor Portsmouth League competition in which teams of 5 archers shoot each month (5 dozen arrows at 20 yds on a 60 cm face). Our recurve 'A' team finished top of Division 1, our 'B' team fourth in Division 2, and Naomi won a silver spoon for the highest ladies' score in the event, 593. Our compound team finished top of division 7 so they should get promoted again this year. Our junior recurve team came third in division 1.

In the Frostbite League in which teams of 5 archers each month shoot 3 dozen arrows at 30 metres outdoors, we came top of Division 1. Naomi had the highest ladies' score in the competition, 356, to win the silver spoon award.

There are 43 divisions each of 6 clubs in the Portsmouth recurve league, 34 in the compound, 7 in the juniors and 30 in the Frosbite league.

Gold Medal for Bethany Roberts

Leamington's 11 year old recurve archer Bethany Roberts, won gold in the Black and Gold Archers Spring Tournament in Cheltenham yesterday.

Shooting the Bristol 4 round of 12 dozen arrows (6 dozen at 40yds, 4 dozen at 30yds and 2 dozen at 20 yds) Bethany scored a superb 1172, to beat the current county record of 1154. Bethany was well ahead of Heather Shepard (Deer Park) 892 and Ygraine Clarke (Cheltenham) 829. She will be competing in two weeks time in the 156th Leamington and Midland Counties Archery Meeting, a two day event which incorporates the Junior County Championships

Leamington Archers in County Match - 20 May 2007

Maddy LaneFive Leamington archers were among the Warwickshire squad which travelled to Eccles for the annual three-way match against Cheshire and Lancashire. Warwickshire finished on top in the two separate competitions for recurve and compound archers.

All archers shot the FITA round of 12 dozen arrows (3 dozen at each of 4 distances - 90, 70, 50 and 30 metres for the men and 70, 60, 50 and 30 metres for the ladies). Shooting conditions were excellent, encouraging some high scores and outstanding individual performances.

The recurve team, comprising Philippa Lowe (Meriden) 1254, Leah Innocent (Coventry) 1207, Madeleine Lane (Leamington) 1188, Tom Kemp (Leamington, pictured left) 1193, Brian Tustin (Leamington) 1180, Adrian Kinzett (Meriden) 1152 and Pete Hunnisett (Leamington) 1124, with a combined total of 8298 had a convincing victory over the other two counties. Lancashire finished second with 7993 and Cheshire third with 7799.

The compound team had a tougher fight on its hands, with Lancashire taking over the lead part way through. The Warwickshire team of Dawn Leide (Leamington) 1286, Janette Ross (Meriden) 1245, Garry Fowler (Meriden) 1363, John Robbins (Meriden) 1349, and Adam Ravenscroft (Bowflights) 1319 pulled out all the stops to accrue 6562. Lancashire finished close behind on 6539 and Cheshire on 6312.

Warwickshire team manager Denis Folkard said "I am very proud of both teams. They performed superbly and there were some very creditable individual performances. The match was a trememdous start to the new season."

Tom Kemp and Dawn Leide both shot pbs.

Naomi selected to compete in World Championships - May 2007

Leamington's Naomi Folkard, along with Chris White of Rugby, were yesterday (20 May) selected to shoot for Great Britain in the forthcoming World Target Championships to be held in Germany in July.

The selection process involved four days of intensive competition, in very hostile weather conditions, at the Lilleshall National Sports Centre. All archers with the necessary qualifying scores gained over the last year were invited. The programme included FITA rounds, FITA 70 rounds and head to head matches, and there was a complicated points scoring system. Both Folkard and White put in convincing performances which guaranteed their selection.

Another National Record for Naomi - 12/13 May 2007

Leamington GB international archer, Naomi Folkard, took a break from target archery to take part in her first field archery competition this year. Naomi, who took the bronze medal in the World Field Championships in Sweden last September, found that she could still put in a very useful performance. In the two day shoot near Petersfield in Hampshire, she won the ladies freestyle event, easily beating the country's top lady field archers, and setting a new national record for the course of unmarked distances in the process.

Archers shot the 24 FITA rounds, unmarked distances on the first day and marked distance on the second. The thick woodland gave some protection from the strong winds, but heavy rain and muddy conditions added to the difficulty of the course. Naomi shot superbly on the unmarked course putting 11 points on to the long-standing national record set by Pauline Edwards in 1995. Her score of 339 was well ahead of Amy Oliver (Dearn Valley) with 301 and Michelle Worthington (Crowthorne) 276. Naomi scored 314 on the marked course, ahead of Jacqui Gould (Crown) 290 and Michelle Worthington 281. This gave her a combined score of 653. Oliver took second place with 580 and Worthington third with 557.

Naomi now holds the national records for the marked, unmarked and the combined rounds. However, because of a heavy commitments this year in target archery, she will be unable to compete at international level in field events, but she is hoping to compete in the World Field Championships to be held next year in Wales.

Redhill 'American' - 7 May 2007

Maddy Lane
Maddy Lane

An unusually small number of Leamington archers went to the annual bank holiday Redhill Open Tournament, but they nevertheless returned with a good medal haul. Archers shot the 'American' round of 30 arrows at each of 60, 50 and 40 yards, in testing windy, showery conditions.

In the ladies' recurve event 19-year-old Maddy Lane, a graphic design student at Coventry University, scored an excellent 751 to win the ladies recurve competition.

In the men's recurve event Brian Tustin put in another sound performance to score 746 and earn silver. James Folkard, who has recently been shooting his compound bow, shot his first recurve competition in 12 months. With a score of 739 he was only beaten into fourth place by just one point, and was awarded the Bowman classification medal. Paul McCarthy, a relative newcomer to open competition, won the medal for 3rd class archers. Marc Heaviside, in his first tournament for over 12 months scored a creditable 565.

Leamington junior, 11 year old Caitlin McCarthy, did well to score 448 for the equivalent junior round.

Shakespear Shoot - Stratford, 22 April 2007

There was a good turn out of Leamington archers for the popular annual Shakespeare Shoot at Stratford. last weekend. Between us we came away with a goodly proportion of the awards.

All archers shot rounds of 9 dozen arrows. The more experienced adults shot the 'Albion' (3 dozen at each of 80, 60 and 50 yds), with the 'Windsor' (3 dozen at each of 60, 50 and 40 yds) available for the less experienced. Juniors could shoot shorter distances according to age. Conditions for the tournament were unusually good, although a tricky wind tended to keep scores down.

In the main men's recurve event Brian Tustin, with 850, had to settle for second place. Clubmates Paul Roberts 827, Pete Hunnisett 816, James Scott 816 and Andrew Tustin 812, all put in good performances. With a handicap adjusted score of 1429 Paul Roberts also took third handicap place.

Leamington ladies also performed well. In the main ladies' recurve competition, Kathy Folkard successfully defended the trophy with 772, and in the ladies' compound competition, Dawn Leide also retained the trophy with an excellent 858.

Leamington's Paul McCarthy, a relative newcomer to tournament archery took first place in the 'Windsor'. Scoring 810, well ahead of the competition.

All the Leamington juniors were medal winners. Henry Scott and Bethany Roberts, both aged 10, were first boy and girl respectively, in the 'Junior Windsor' (40, 30 and 20 yds). They both scored superbly, 880 and 864, and were well ahead of the opposition. Leamington's Caitlin McCarthy also put in an excellent personal performance, and with a handicap adjusted score of 1601, was awarded the silver medal in the handicap event.

Warwickshire County Trials - April 2007

Leamington archers yesterday put in some excellent scores at the county trials, which were hosted by the Meriden Club at their Forest Grounds. At the start of the outdoor season, when archers usually have yet to find their best form, the superb shooting conditions, warm with no wind, encouraged some good scores.

Archers shot the FITA round of 12 dozen arrows, 3 dozen at each of (90, 70,50 and 30 metres for the men, and 70, 60, 50 and 30 metres for the ladies.) Recurve and compound archers took part.

Leamington archers scores were as follows:

Ladies recurve - 1st Naomi Folkard 1342; 3rd Maddy Lane 1199; 6th Kathy Folkard 1066.

Men recurve - 2nd Colin Geenes 1190, 3rd Brian Tustin 1181, 4th Pete Hunnisett 1138, 6th Tony Wager 1102, 9th Paul Roberts 1045.

Ladies compound - 2nd Dawn Leide 12 53.

Men compound - 4th James Folkard 1293.

GB international and Olympic archer, Naomi Folkard, was on superb form. Fresh back from the FITA World Cup event in Korea where she was part of the bronze medal winning ladies team, she put 12 points on to her existing pb. However, because of international commitments she is unlikely to be available to shoot for Warwickshire during the coming season.

The first county match will be a three-way match against Cheshire and Lancashire at Eccles on 20th May.

Leamington win Team Award - Meriden, 8 April 2007

Leamington recurve archers won the team award at the first local shoot of the outdoor season, Meriden's 22nd Open American. A fine day with little wind saw some excellent scores with Brian Tustin taking 3rd place in the Gents Recurve with 758, Andrew Tustin winning the Junior Gents shooting the full distance and Dawn Leide taking 2nd place in the Ladies Compound.

Our Juniors also shot well with Henry Scott being 2nd boy in the Junior American with 697, and Bethany Roberts and Caitlin McCarthy 2nd and 3rd in the girls event with 734 and 564. Henry and Bethany both notched up new club records with their scores.

Brian Tustin, James Scott, Pete Hunnisett and Andrew Tustin formed the Leamington Recurve Team which won the team trophy for the third year running. James won the 1st class award and Paul Roberts won the 2nd class award.
